The Alexandra Park community was constructed starting in 1968. The last structure constructed was 20 Vanauley, constructed in the 1980s. It was originally a public housing neighborhood with some buildings handled by the province and others by the City of Toronto. By 1990, the leadership of the Alexandra Park Locals Association (APRA) were convinced that locals would prefer tenant-led property management. After years of area examination, in 1998 the province approved a plan to change Alexandra Park to the Atkinson Housing Co-operative (Atkinson/Alexandra Park) and transfer residential property management responsibilities to the freshly formed co-operative.

Today, the Atkinson Co-op manages 410 townhouse and apartment units in Alexandra Park, with Toronto Community Housing managing the remaining 396 apartment units. The revitalization is a partnership between both organizations to transform the neighbourhood.
